FAQ's and BUNS Rules...

B.U.N.S. on Ice Rules of the Game

Part I - Playing Rules

1. Have fun

2. Icing - The red line will be used for icing.

3. Two Line Pass - The red will not be used; however, the blue lines will be used.

4. Puck During Line Changes - Players are not allowed to play the puck after the line change horn has sounded; violation will result in face-off in player’s defensive zone. This rule does not apply to goalies. Goalies may play the puck at any time.

Players that are “double shifting” and remain on the ice may not be the first player to touch the puck after a line change.

5. Slapshots - Sticks are not to be raised above the waist. Violation will result in play being stopped and the ensuing face-off in the offender's defensive zone.

6. Shooting on Goal After Horn - If a player shoots on goal after the horn has sounded, player will be assessed a minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, if in the opinion of the referee, the player had sufficient time after the horn to refrain from taking the shot.

7. Offside When Changing Lines - When a player carries or passes the puck into the attacking zone while there is still an attacking player in the zone from the previous shift, off-sides shall be called and the face off will be held accordingly. This rule is put in place to encourage the ending shift players to get to the bench and off of the ice as quickly as possible.

8. Have fun!

Part II - Penalty Times

1. Minor Penalty - A minor penalty taken in the first minute of a players shift will result in the player serving the remainder of the shift in the penalty box. If the penalty is taken in the second minute of a players shift, the player must sit out the remainder of that shift as well as the first minute of that player’s next shift.

2. Major Penalty - A Major penalty will result in immediate ejection from the game and review by the commissioner for further action. Remember BUNS has a no tolerance policy toward players whose testosterone levels are higher than their I.Q.

3. Penalties at the end of a shift - If a penalty is given at the end of a shift (after the horn blows), the penalized player will sit the firt minute of that player's next shift. E.g., the longest penalty in BUNS is 1:59 if you were to get a penalty blown 1 second into your shift. Referees can give major penalties at their discretion.

Part III - Scorekeeping/Time Clock

1. Refereed (IHOA) games will consist of three (3) stopped clock periods. A “running clock” will be used at the end of the game if necessary.

2. The horn will sound every two minutes signaling the line change. Players may not enter or exit the bench over the boards. Players entering the ice should do so from the door on the defensive end of their bench. Players leaving the ice should enter the bench through the door on the offensive end.

Part IV - Player Trading

It is the duty of the captains to assure that teams are balanced in terms of skill level and number of lines per team each game, and, if necessary, to make trades to achieve parity. A trade must consider the skill levels of the players being traded as well as those for whom they are replacing. Thus, parity can normally be reached by trading a player within one or two ranks of the top missing player(s). It is not in the best interest of BUNS for a team to try to force a trade designed to “blow out those other guys”. Our goal is to make each game as fun, fair, and competitive as possible, and the captains are urged to follow these simple BUNS guidelines. Unless absolutely necessary, a given player should not be traded more than twice per session.

A note from Mom about "walk-ons"...
I have had several questions regarding BUNS’ policy for letting unannounced “walk-on” players in our sessions, usually as friends of current participants.

It is far too chaotic just to have people show up and expect to play. Team balance and fairness to paying members would be compromised if this were allowed to happen indiscriminately. Thus, unless it clearly benefits the existing teams, e.g., would keep a team from skating with only 9 players, the other commissioners and I will not go for the “my buddy is in town and I brought him” story. Too many people would have a right to be mad.

On the other hand, I have always tried to have a controllable means by which wait listed people could have a free BUNS trial before they join. Chances are you were offered this yourself, if you were put on the wait list. However, in this case, such participants have to arrange directly with Randy so that ice time is not unduly taken from existing players, only one extra guy per session is scheduled, and no feelings are hurt. What I do in this situation is to set them up in a specific session where drills are maxed. They do the drills for free and play in the game only if the commissioner and captains think it fair. Usually they do get to play because we are often short-handed and our leaders have big hearts.

The bottom line for me is always the same. I want to do what is fairest and best for the majority of BUNS. We have had situations at Carmel where one group is so short-handed (say super bowl night) that Coach Paul has to beg guys from the previous group (or in one instance, the lobby) to get enough for two lines. Their participation, though not paid for, benefits the masses, and thus is quite justifiable. So when you see strangers at your session, hopefully their participation is planned in a thoughtful way that is fair to us all.

Is it a goal?

If the puck is shot before the 2-minute line change horn but goes in after the horn, is it a goal? First of all, now that my neurosurgeon has forced my early retirement, I was not aware that we had anyone left in BUNS who shot the puck so slow as for this to be an issue. However, if it does happens, the answer is “no goal”.

Here it is in “rule talk”. If the puck crosses the goal line after the signal for the two-minute line change has sounded, the shot will not count as a goal. Naturally, the referees will determine the timing. If the puck goes in anyway, it will be deemed dead and a face off will occur in the neutral zone. Please help us reinforce this ruling with our various refs and coaches by calmly pointing out the ruling, if this occurs in a game before we can inform relevant parties.
